Many catalytic units are now designed to include CO burners; then why is it still necessary to add CO as an oxidizing agent in the regenerator? And if it is added, how much is appropriate? What is used to make the judgment?
The regeneration form with an oxidizer addition is called complete regeneration. A CO oxidizer is generally not necessary, unless a small amount is added during tail combustion to control the dilute-phase temperature and prevent it from rising too high. The main function of the CO incinerator is to recover the thermal energy from the flue gas to generate steam.
Incomplete regeneration does not require the use of an oxidizer; however, a CO burner is needed to initiate combustion. In complete regeneration, excess oxygen leads to a lean-burn condition also known as afterburning, and it is in this case that an oxidizer is required. Waste heat boilers do not need a flame to burn carbon monoxide, but some systems employ gas burners in order to produce more gas
Three-effect additives can also be added to address SOx, NOx, and CO.
