Recently, the ZCA-1 solid acid alkylation technology, jointly developed by the Research Institute of Petroleum Processing, Beijing Yanshan Branch, and Catalyst Co., Ltd., has passed the technical evaluation organized by the Science and Technology Department of Sinopec. The expert panel unanimously agreed that this technology has reached the international advanced level. This technology uses isobutane and butylene as raw materials, along with solid acid catalysts and an efficient fixed-bed process, to produce clean alkylated gasoline. It eliminates the safety and environmental issues associated with liquid acid alkylation, making it a green alkylation process technology. In recent years, China has implemented increasingly strict environmental protection regulations, and producing clean gasoline that meets these regulatory requirements is one of the main challenges facing China’s petrochemical industry today. Alkylated gasoline is a mixture primarily composed of C8 branched-chain alkanes, containing no olefins or aromatics. It has virtually no sulfur or nitrogen, along with low sensitivity and vapor pressure. It is a clean and ideal high-octane component for gasoline. The traditional liquid acid alkylation production process is greatly restricted in its development and further widespread application due to its inherent corrosivity and toxicity, as well as the waste acid emissions generated during the process. Developing green solid acid alkylation processes has become a major focus and challenge in the oil refining industry. Through more than a decade of efforts, the Institute of Petrochemistry has developed efficient and stable solid acid catalysts as well as in-situ regeneration technologies. Combined with an economically viable fixed-bed process, this has enabled the green production of alkylated gasoline. Is there anyone who knows the specifics?
The solid acid process has been discussed for decades, but little actual progress has been made; it’s hoped that this time we will see industrial-scale installations put into use.

Albemarle and CB&I announced that the project of Zibo Haiyi Fine Chemicals (in Shandong Province, China), which uses this technology to produce 155 million liters of alkylated oils per year (see figure below), was successfully launched in August 2015. ” Last year it was said that solid acid catalysts had been put into industrial use, but their economic viability has not been clear. To be honest, I think their economic efficiency is still likely inferior to that of concentrated sulfuric acid.

It is estimated that without proper protection of these independently developed intellectual properties, even if solid acid alkylation technology were to be developed, there would still be rampant piracy and copyright infringement. There wouldn’t be a sufficient market environment for its growth; in other words, no favorable conditions for the development of this emerging technology.
