For small horizontal storage tanks, to facilitate manufacturing and installation, flat lids are generally used at both ends of the tank body (design pressure of 1.4–2.5 MPa, diameter of 500–750 mm); the thickness of such flat lids ranges from 45 to 65 mm. I saw the flat-plate design with ribs specified in GB150 and HG 20583, but I have a few questions? 1. Regarding the welding method for plates with girders and flat covers, GB150 specifies something similar only for the welding of the flat cover to the pressure-bearing components. Is it possible to choose either method, or are there any specific requirements? 2. It is not clear whether the flat cover with ribbed plates should be placed inside or outside the cylinder; no instructions or examples have been found on this. Has anyone used a flat cover with ribbed plates? Please share your experience.
1. For the welding method of flat covers with gusset plates, GB150 requires double-sided welding between the gusset plates and the flat cover. 2. From the perspective of gusset plate calculations, no corrosion margin is taken into account; furthermore, considering normal-pressure vessels, the gusset plates should be placed outside the vessel. If you place it inside, you need to consider the corrosion margin carefully.
Using end caps is more economical; flat lids are more commonly used in containers at normal or slightly increased pressure.

Pressure vessels generally do not use flat cover structures...
Since the flat cover is subject to gas-liquid impact, using a head may result in noise generation due to its thinness. So only a flat cover can be used.

High-pressure vessels. Since a structural design with a high length-to-diameter ratio is generally adopted, flat covers are also frequently used. The advantage of using a flat cover is that no welding is required; only the sealing issue needs to be addressed.

Flat-head bolted flanges are extremely common in heat exchangers.
