As is well known, a fuel transfer pump is used for transporting fuel, which is usually light oils such as gasoline and diesel. Light oils are flammable materials; therefore, when transferring fuel, it is necessary to avoid the generation of sparks, as sparks can be very dangerous. How can we prevent it from producing sparks? To learn more about this fuel transfer pump, I went to the workshop specifically to talk to the technicians who are responsible for its assembly. After discussing things with them, I found that there are several points to keep in mind when assembling the fuel transfer pump; I’ll introduce them to you below. 1. Special materials are used for customizing the overcurrent components. Fuel transfer pumps generally include types such as centrifugal pumps, gear pumps, and screw pumps. Special attention must be paid when these pumps come into contact with fuel, whether it’s the gears in gear pumps or the screws and screw sleeves in screw pumps. Either the impeller in a centrifugal pump or similar components must be made of copper, as copper does not generate sparks easily. 2. The materials of the stationary and rotating rings of the mechanical seal are specially designed. There are various materials used for mechanical seals, including cemented carbide, graphite, silicon carbide, etc. For mechanical seals in fuel transfer pumps, it is advisable to avoid using metal components; one can opt for a silicon carbide-graphite type or a silicon carbide-silicon carbide type. In the case of a packing seal, a graphite seal can be used. 3. The protective cover is specially designed. The components that handle high flow rates in the fuel transfer pump are made of special materials, and spark-free covers are also preferred. Spark-free covers are essential both for the fuel transfer pump itself and for the overall operating environment. 4. The motor is an explosion-proof motor. Fuel transfer pumps are equipped with explosion-proof motors by default, which is necessary for safety reasons. Since the fuel transfer pump transports flammable materials, it is necessary to implement safety measures. Attention must be paid to everything from the internal structure of the pump to its external components, in order to prevent sparks from being generated during the transfer of fuel and thus avoid potential safety hazards.
