I would like to ask fellow sailors: how can a storage tank be nitrogen-sealed? What should the nitrogen seal pressure be?
Nitrogen sealing is a relatively common technique, and the related processes are easy to find information on~
The pressure for nitrogen sealing is the control pressure of your storage tank in daily use. A simple way to control it is through proportional control; you can check that out
Simple stage-by-stage control will suffice
The pressure for nitrogen sealing is generally such that the saturated vapor pressure of the storage medium at its storage temperature is lower than the design pressure of the storage tank. The process design manual also specifies the set pressure for commonly used nitrogen seal valves. But for those that are volatile, a pressure tank needs to be considered.
This process is relatively simple. It mainly depends on the pressure-bearing capacity of the storage tank. The pressure range is set too wide, resulting in high stress requirements for the storage tank ; Setting it too narrow will cause the nitrogen seal valve to activate frequently. It should also be considered in synchronization with the pressure setting of the breather valve and relief valve.
First, consider the design pressure of your storage tank; then check whether it is equipped with a vent valve and an emergency discharge manhole, and set different levels of control pressure for each. The inflow and outflow of nitrogen are controlled by control valves; generally, the tank is kept at a slight positive pressure, with the nitrogen seal pressure set at 20-75 MMH2O
It is recommended to refer to the engineering design specifications for chemical plant process systems, which provide detailed information on this topic
The selection of the nitrogen sealing pressure depends on the properties of the material stored in the tank, as well as the conditions for receiving and delivering it. It’s not possible to specify a fixed value; some applications can be satisfied with 1 kPa, while others require 0.5 MPa or more
