Can combustible liquid pipelines be insulated with rigid polyurethane foam? Does Petrochemical Regulation 6.1.2 require the use of non-combustible materials?
In accordance with clause 6.1.2 of the Petrochemical Regulations, the insulation layer of liquefied hydrocarbon and flammable liquid storage tanks shall be made of non-combustible materials. When the insulation layer is made of flame-retardant foam plastic, its oxygen index should be no less than 30. ”The fire resistance rating of rigid polyurethane is B1 (difficult to ignite), and it can be used at temperatures as low as -80°C; therefore, rigid polyurethane foam plastic can be used for insulation in pipelines carrying flammable liquids. But currently, PIR or K-FLEX Flexi-Therm insulation materials are commonly used for thermal insulation in the market. Their fire resistance rating is also B1 (difficult to ignite), and they can withstand temperatures as low as -196°C. K-FLEX Flexi-Therm insulation materials are more expensive, but they have a longer service life, lower heat loss, and are very easy to install and maintain.
