These are artifacts unearthed from the Chu dynasty tombs in the Tianzi Lake Industrial Park in Anji. The wooden lacquerware is very old, severely corroded, and has fallen apart; it is no longer possible to determine its original purpose.
It’s not obvious, right? Take a look at the restored image. That’s right, it’s a toilet. Combining the sewer pipes shown in Figures 1 and 2, one can imagine that toilets were invented thousands of years ago.
Excavations at the Epang Palace site from the Qin Dynasty uncovered a magnificent, 20-meter-long underground drainage system from the Han Dynasty. The grayish-white drainage pipes are made of pottery and extend in the southwest and northeast directions. Each section of the drainage pipe is about 60 centimeters long; one end of the pipe is thicker than the other, with a diameter of thirty to forty centimeters. It has a rope-pattern design on the outside, with a polka-dot pattern inside. 38 ceramic tubes that made up the pipeline were excavated and cleaned; they were ingeniously designed. The ceramic pipes are all of the same size, which makes it easy to assemble them by fitting the larger end onto the smaller one; in this way, each section connects to the next, forming an underground drainage pipe that can reach up to 20 meters in length.
