Why does the liquid phase dealkalinizing nitrogen compound bed have to go up and down?

This is the feed protection bed of the propane dehydrogenation unit, liquid propane material. The bed is filled with Rohm&Haas Amberlyst 15 resin to remove basic nitrogen compounds and organic metals. This is the liquid phase. Why should the material flow direction be designed to go up and down? I wonder if it’s because the resin is special? Or do you want to shorten the piping length?
Isn’t the liquid phase just going in and out?
Generally, the gas phase goes in and out, while the liquid phase goes in and out, which is more reasonable.
I share this because the adsorbent is resin. If you blow it upward, it will be carried out. If you go downward, just install a filter and a porcelain ball on the lower outlet to block it.

Airspeed cannot be increased. Maybe it's to use kinetic energy?
It depends on whether you have a floating bed or a fixed bed.
