Things related to methanol: At the end of 2015, I returned from the northwestern region, where I was involved in methanol production, to the northeastern region to work on methanol catalysts. In 2016, I was on business trips for 151 days, visiting 24 companies in 16 provinces, municipalities, and autonomous regions; of these, 21 were methanol production companies and 3 were BDO production companies (two of which also had methanol production facilities). There are many things related to methanol, of all kinds. 1. The company in Shandong has the highest diol pressure, at 23.3 MPa ; 2. The highest monol alcohol pressure was recorded by a company in Guizhou, at 9.6 MPa ; 3. The catalyst bed at a company in Shanxi had the highest peak temperature, at 309°C (Linda Tower); it also had the highest outlet temperature, at 287°C℃ ; 4. Among the catalysts for 300,000 tons of methanol production, the smallest volume required is 19.6 m3, used by a company in Guizhou (with a space-time yield of over 2.0) ; 5. The highest methane content in the fresh gas was recorded by a company in Yunnan, at 12% (with a methane content of 42% in the gas entering the tower) ; 6. The highest water content in crude methanol was found in a company in Inner Mongolia, at 23% ; 7. The largest single-mtower methanol production capacity is 1.2 million tons at a company in Shanxi, with a catalyst volume of 100 m3.
8. The largest tube diameter of the shell-and-tube synthesis tower is φ57.7, with a tube length of 9000.
It’s truly a scene of diversity and debate among various schools of thought. On the other hand, science is too imprecise – anything goes.
9. The methanol synthesis reactors that have been seen include: Casalita (plate-type), Lurgi type (shell-and-tube type); in addition, there are also Anchun reactor, Guochang reactor, and Linde reactor
10. The column with the lowest pressure difference in the catalyst bed is the Anchun column, while that with the highest pressure difference is the Linda column.

11. There are many manufacturers of methanol catalysts available. Among the imported ones are Zhejiang Sinopec Wanhua, Topsoe, and Clariant; while the domestic manufacturers include Dalian Rike, Nanjing Chemical Research Institute, Sichuan Tianyi, Clariant, Beijing Sanju, Linqu Daxiang, and Sichuan Yalian. Among these, the catalysts produced by Beijing Sanju are used only in their own projects; Linqu Daxiang and Sichuan Yali mainly participate in the Lianchun project.
12. Catalysts are generally reduced after being loaded; a company in Shanxi directly added 3 cubic meters of the reduced form in late December 2016.

Why do we need to use so much catalyst here? For 250,000 tons of methanol, two parallel synthesis towers require a total catalyst loading of 62 m³.
