There are no units in China that operate using sludge oil fluidized-bed hydrogenation; the patent holders mainly fall into two groups: Axens and Chevron. Principle: For the hydroprocessing of boiling-bed residue, thermal cracking reactions are the dominant reactions. In a fluidized bed reactor, the catalyst bed is in a state of complete mixing; the gas, liquid, and solid phases are thoroughly mixed, ensuring thorough contact between the catalyst and the feed oil as well as hydrogen, thereby resulting in high reaction kinetics efficiency ; There is no issue of impurities clogging the bed; the reactor pressure remains low and does not change throughout the operation cycle ; It is possible to process low-quality raw materials ; The interior of the reactor is essentially at an isothermal state; there is no need to inject cold hydrogen, and local overheating does not occur.
Patent holders: Axens and Chevron. Its principle is the same as that of a fixed-bed reactor. In China, projects such as Shenhua’s coal-to-oil production utilize bubbling beds for coal tar hydrogenation, but many of such systems are no longer in operation today.

There is no need for cold hydrogen injection; initially, hydrogen and residue are mixed to raise the temperature, after which they are fed into the reactor from the bottom, with catalyst being added from the top – that’s how the reaction takes place, right? If cracking is the main process, what technical aspects need to be paid attention to?
