New hydrogen is added during the hydrogenation process, and this new hydrogen comes from the hydrogen production unit. During hydrogen production, depending on the processes and conditions used, small amounts of carbon monoxide and low-molecular-weight organic compounds may enter the hydrogenation reactor along with the hydrogen, and these substances can produce methane under hydrogenation conditions. Furthermore, if the temperature in the hydrogenation reactor is too high, it can also cause some cracking, and cracking as well produces a small amount of methane.

The methanation reaction is a process in which CO and H2 react to produce CH4 and H2O; under the action of a nickel catalyst, a side reaction occurs that generates CH4, which affects the purity of the recycled hydrogen and thus reduces its hydrogen pressure, influencing the depth of the hydrogenation reaction. Strict limits must be imposed on the CO content in the new hydrogen, with a general requirement of no more than 20 PPM.
