Generally, design firms do not prepare a comprehensive list of materials required for steel structures; often, one has to look at the drawings themselves in order to calculate the necessary quantities. I have never done such calculations before, so I don’t know how to determine the exact amounts of materials needed for a steel structure. The details are particularly difficult to calculate. How do experienced professionals determine the materials required based on the steel structure drawings? What aspects need to be taken into consideration? Please advise me, as I’m still learning

It’s recommended to look at professional budget sheets for steel structure materials. This task is simple in theory, but it’s not easy either – it takes some thought to understand it properly.
First, you must be able to understand the drawings and be familiar with steel structures; otherwise, you won’t be able to comprehend what is indicated in them. It is essential to thoroughly understand the drawings: identify which ones are steel beams and how many types of steel beams there are; determine the various specifications for steel columns; find out how many wind-resistant columns there are and what their specifications are, and so on. Although the design institute does not provide statistics in the drawings, the numbers of different models and specifications are indicated there, so all you need to do is count them. It is crucial to examine the drawings carefully – even within the same row of steel columns, the columns at the corners and those in the middle will differ from each other, and the same applies to other elements as well. It is recommended to read GB50205 in detail.

Generally, it is calculated based on the actual drawings, with an additional 5% allowance added. If possible, submit as many materials as you can; it’s impossible to carry out a project without wasting materials.
