I would like to ask: How should the discharge location of the safety valve for a chloromethane storage tank be determined? Section 6.3.13 of GB50160 states that it is permissible to empty the contents on-site; is this feasible, given that the substance is toxic? It should be transferred to a safe location – but how should such a safe location be defined? Who knows? Please share your insights... :Q @High-end, elegant, and premium
Your safety valve can be connected to a pipeline leading to a methane drainage tank, allowing for recovery and preventing waste while also avoiding pollution.

The discharge outlet should be directed above the equipment, at least to a place where people can access it—with a distance of at least 1.5 meters from people’s heads. Avoid poisoning.
It’s just occasional accidental releases; the amount of gas released when the safety valve activates is about 1 ton. The current approach is to build a tall chimney and direct the outlet of the safety valve to that chimney for discharge... The idea is to give on-site personnel some time to react in case the safety valve activates, thereby containing the toxic substances within the chimney before taking action to deal with the incident... What do you think?
In my case, it’s just the safety valve activating due to an accident; there’s also a sewage tank involved, plus a liquefied hydrocarbon storage tank, so corresponding safety measures need to be implemented, which increases the investment cost. The client isn’t willing to go along with that……
It’s possible to do it, but there are a few things to keep in mind. First, from a safety perspective, you need to ensure that there is no risk of open flames or sparks inside the chimney; otherwise, you’re just asking for trouble. Secondly, is there an online monitoring device installed by the environmental protection authorities on top of your chimney? Could there be a possibility that your chloromethane emissions exceed the allowed limits? If so, that would be problematic – the environmental protection agency will immediately send an alert and record the data, which will make things difficult in the future. Third, the back pressure caused by the chimney’s emissions must be taken into account to prevent failure to discharge.
Thank you very much for your feedback! For the first one we considered it in the form of a chimney; it’s actually an exhaust pipe. We haven’t thought things through as thoroughly regarding the management of open flames ; I haven’t yet communicated with the environmental protection department regarding the second online monitoring system for environmental protection; however, since it’s only for emergency releases, there should be no problem in communicating with them ; Thirdly, the air at the top of the chimney should flow horizontally; there should be a negative pressure applied to the chimney continuously, so that there is no backpressure that would prevent exhaust
As for the rest, you can consider it on your own. To answer your last question: since you are dealing with chimneys, I assumed that you might be using them in conjunction with other systems, and that there could be other gases being emitted. Although negative pressure exists at the top, there is gas flow at the lower collection points; in such cases, the influence of those other gases needs to be taken into account. Back pressure will then be generated.
