Our factory uses the methanol process package developed by East China University of Science and Technology. The synthesis tower is a conventional externally cooled, insulated shell-and-tube type low-pressure synthesis tower. I’ve heard that there is a special way to open the discharge port, but nothing is indicated in the drawings; I would appreciate it if experts who have handled catalyst removal could provide some guidance.
In shell-and-tube towers, the catalyst is generally removed after passivation. The discharge port of the synthesis tower also doesn’t have any special structure; when the blind flange is opened, there is a baffle inside. It falls off automatically after rotating 90 degrees.
Which manufacturer’s catalyst is being used, and what is the volume?
For the Nanjing Shide catalyst 41M3, which baffle needs to be rotated? Are there any settings like handles? Also, if it rotates to 90°, the contents inside the tower will spill out – how can the operator avoid being hit by them? The blind flange is nearly 3 meters above the ground

Nanjing Shide was later renamed Southern Chemical, and then again to Clariant; it was dissolved in 2016.
