The master cylinder’s function is to convert mechanical energy into pressure in the brake fluid within the brake lines, while the slave cylinders convert this pressure into force that acts on the brake calipers; it is the brake calipers that push against the brake pads, thereby squeezing the brake disc. The master cylinder, also known as the main braking fluid (or gas) reservoir, serves primarily to push the braking fluid (or gas) to each individual brake caliper in order to move the pistons. The master brake cylinder is a unidirectional piston-type hydraulic cylinder whose function is to convert the mechanical energy input by the pedal mechanism into hydraulic energy. Brake master cylinders come in single-chamber and double-chamber types, which are used in single-circuit and dual-circuit hydraulic braking systems respectively. The function of the brake cylinder is to convert the hydraulic energy supplied from the master brake cylinder into mechanical energy, thereby enabling the brakes to operate. Brake wheel cylinders come in single-piston and double-piston types. Single-piston brake calipers are mainly used in double-lead shoe and double-follow shoe brakes, while double-piston brake calipers have a wider range of applications; they can be used in lead-follow shoe brakes as well as in two-way double-lead shoe brakes and two-way self-boosting brakes.
