Consequences of reverse rotation of a centrifugal pump impeller
When a centrifugal pump operates in reverse, in addition to low outlet pressure and reduced flow rate as well as low pump efficiency, prolonged operation in this direction can cause the impeller cover to loosen or fall off. Once the cover falls off, it can lead to mechanical accidents.
Reversal: the impeller back cap has fallen off. The consequence is friction between the impeller and the inlet, excessive current that causes jamming and burns out the motor
If the impeller rotates in the reverse direction for an extended period, the impeller nut may come loose; in mild cases, the impeller itself will be damaged, and the shaft ends will suffer wear. In severe cases, this can lead to safety accidents – it depends on what fluid is being transported
Reduced flow rate may cause the impeller to fall off and get damaged
The reverse rotation of a centrifugal pump usually occurs after the pump is shut down; backflow of fluid occurs due to the failure of the check valve, which can lead to the loosening or detachment of the impeller cover. Once the cover detaches, it can result in mechanical accidents.
The detachment of the impeller can cause the shaft to deflect and damage the sealing surfaces. If the impeller has interlocking keys, it won’t fall off, and the mechanical seal should not get damaged
