Self-priming pump, return pipe, operation

It’s a seal-less, automatically controlled self-priming pump. After the pump starts operating, if the return pipe is closed, no water is discharged; only when the return pipe is open and some water flows out can the pump deliver water properly. What could be the reason for this? The head capacity is 105.5 m – are there any issues with the operation?
Check whether the check valve at the inlet is leaking
