Here, our gear pumps usually pump oil, but sometimes they pump water as well; we have never encountered the situation you mentioned. Could it be caused by air in your pump? First, open the outlet to release the air; once it’s all water, try switching back to the normal operating mode.

Conventional gear pumps and rotor pumps are not suitable for transporting low-viscosity media, such as water (the viscosity of water is 1 cst). If water is to be transported occasionally using a gear pump, it is possible to discuss this with the manufacturer before placing an order in order to reduce the clearance of the pump. If water needs to be transported over a long distance, it is necessary to change the pump’s configuration; for example, the shaft sleeves should be made of silicon carbide, and the shafts should be treated with a coating (this is because water lacks lubricity and has a low viscosity). If a rotor pump is used to transport water, when placing an order, a rotor covered with rubber can be selected; there is no problem at all in using it for transporting water, and it works very well, in addition to having a strong self-priming capability.
