Our company had repairs done yesterday; we wanted to replace a preheater, so we installed blind flanges on the gas pipes. However, there was a leak inside the gas valves, so the workers who were responsible for installing the blind flanges wore long-handled gas masks, with tubes about one meter long. When unscrewing the screws on the gas pipes, gas leaked, and one worker who was in the downwind area was overcome by the fumes. I don’t understand why that happened – shouldn’t a long-handled gas mask allow use in any concentration of gas? I’ll answer the original poster’s question: the other end of the long tube must be in a safe location upwind, and it should not be placed in an environment with hazardous conditions or downwind of such areas. Long-tube respirators are generally used for work in confined spaces; the inhalation end of the long tube should be placed outside the confined space, in a location where the air quality is satisfactory! This device must not be used in areas where accidents have occurred and emergency response is needed. In the situations you described, the intake end is placed in a hazardous atmosphere (and moreover, its length is only one meter), so of course gas will be drawn in!
