Based on my experience with ASTM materials: experience in purchasing power pipelines for 4 x 600MW units, as well as 3 years of experience supervising chemical pipelines at steel pipe factories. There are many types of seamless pipes: 1. According to the manufacturing process, it is divided into: cold drawing, hot rolling, and hot expansion. 2. By application: 2.1 Power industry: Turbine islands such as A106B, A106C (boiler make-up water); A335P12, A335P91. Boilers: SA213T12, SA213T22, SA304TP347H. 2.2 Chemical industry: Oil well pipes API 5CT L80, P110; Pipeline pipes API 5L PSL2 X70. 3. Pipe sizes: 3” (88.9), 4” (114.3), 6” (168.7). 4. Wall thicknesses: ASME B36.10 (c.s.), B36.19 (s.s.)
Generally speaking, the classification of pipes depends on several factors such as material standards, grade of material, and size/thickness. Tubes specified by the A106, A335, and A213 standards are used not only in the power industry but also extensively in the chemical and petrochemical industries. Pipe sizes range from 1/4\" to several inches. All of these refer to the US standard system. China and Europe have different standards for pipes, materials, and size ranges.
