Pressure testing of gravity flow pipelines

Hello, everyone from CNOOC. Some of the pipes at the construction site are open, or they allow flow due to the gravity of the fluid. Do such pipes still require hydrostatic testing?

It depends on the type of medium involved; if it’s an open pipeline, it’s usually a water pipeline that is non-toxic and non-flammable. In such cases, the SHT 3533-2013 standard can be applied. Clause 8.1.1 of this standard stipulates that when the design pressure is less than 0.1 Mpa, unless otherwise specified in the design documents, a hydrostatic test on the pipeline is not required – only a water-filled test is necessary.
