International standards in the oil and gas pipeline sector, developed under China’s leadership, have been released

The State Administration for Market Regulation announced on September 18 that the international standard \"Terminology for pipeline systems in the oil and gas industry (including low-carbon energy)\\" (ISO 5872:2025), developed under China’s leadership, was officially released and put into effect. Through the approach of \"Chinese proposals and global consensus,\" it unified 287 terms related to oil and gas pipelines on an international scale for the first time, ensuring that each term has a single definition with the same meaning worldwide. Terminology standards are the cornerstone for technical exchanges and cooperation in the global oil and gas pipeline industry. This standard is based on China’s **standard \"Terminology in the Petroleum and Natural Gas Industry – Part 3: Onshore Oil and Gas Engineering\"**, and covers areas such as general principles, materials and equipment, design, construction, pressure testing, operation and maintenance, as well as corrosion protection. It integrates fully the term definitions and professional concepts of various international stakeholders. It took five years to develop this standard. China took the lead in forming an international working group composed of 38 experts from 13 countries, establishing a collaborative mechanism between domestic and international parties. A total of 21 technical seminars were held with experts from within and abroad, and 25 rounds of text revisions were carried out, ultimately resulting in an international standard with a rigorous structure and comprehensive content. The release and implementation of this standard will provide the international oil and gas pipeline industry with an authoritative and unified framework for communication, significantly reducing communication costs and technical barriers arising from differences in terminology, and laying a solid foundation for international cooperation and exchange.
