Recently, the environmental impact assessment report for Hongniu (Ordos) Environmental Protection Technology Co., Ltd.’s project aimed at the comprehensive utilization of waste salts in the green environmental protection industry through circular economy approaches was approved by the Ecology and Environment Bureau of Ordos City, Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, marking significant progress in the advancement of this project. The total investment for this project is 2,300 million yuan, of which 23.56 million yuan is allocated to environmental protection measures. The construction site is located in the Sanliangliang area of the Dalaat Industrial Park, within the Economic Development Zone of Dalaat Banner, Ordos City, Inner Mongolia. Previously, in March 2023, the project was registered with the local Development and Reform Commission. The main construction components of the project include the main plant building (waste salt treatment unit, ion-exchange membrane electrolysis unit), warehouses, tank areas, loading and unloading platforms, temporary storage facilities for hazardous waste, as well as auxiliary facilities such as a comprehensive building and a R&D center. The project uses waste salt and raw salt as raw materials. The waste salt undergoes a pyrolytic oxidation process to remove organic substances, and is then subjected to wet refining to separate salts until it meets industrial salt standards. After adding an appropriate amount of brine, ion-exchange membrane electrolysis technology is employed to produce products such as caustic soda and chlorine gas. Upon completion, the project will be capable of processing 300,000 tons of industrial waste salt annually, with an annual output of 300,000 tons of chlor-alkali products. According to the approval document, the Comprehensive Support Center of the Ordos Ecological Environment Bureau organized experts to conduct a technical evaluation of the project, resulting in a technical evaluation report for the project. The \"Report\" and the \"Technical Assessment Report\" conclude that, on the premise of fully implementing various ecological and environmental protection measures, the adverse environmental impacts of the project construction can be alleviated and controlled to a certain extent. Therefore, our Bureau, in principle, agrees that your unit may proceed with the construction in accordance with the nature, scale, location, technology, and ecological and environmental protection measures of the construction project as specified in the “Report” and the “Technical Evaluation Report”. Reportedly, as one of China’s demonstration bases for modern coal chemical industry, Ordos City has now established modern coal chemical industry clusters involving coal-to-methanol, coal-to-oil, coal-to-urea, coal-to-natural gas, and coal-to-olefins production. For some time now, the problems of \"difficult treatment and high costs\" associated with high-salinity water have been one of the bottlenecks restricting the sustainable development of the local chemical industry. Through years of intensive technological innovation and continuous exploration, Ordos City has now developed a set of technologies and engineering solutions for the treatment and disposal of brine. This has completely replaced the outdated method of using drying ponds for brine, and progress has been made in preventing and controlling pollution caused by brine in the city’s coal chemical industry.
