Recently, Lianhong New Materials stated on the investor interaction platform that the company’s 50,000 tons per year PPC plant is expected to come online in the second quarter of this year. The new generation of PPC technology developed jointly by the company and relevant institutes of the Chinese Academy of Sciences represents an innovative breakthrough in the field of biodegradable materials and the efficient utilization of carbon dioxide. The copolymerization of carbon dioxide and propylene oxide yields polypropylene carbonate (PPC). PPC possesses advantages such as a good balance between stiffness and flexibility, excellent barrier properties, high transparency, outstanding water retention capabilities, and biodegradability; it is therefore an ideal material for disposable films. It can replace traditional non-degradable materials, and particularly holds great market potential in replacing conventional plastic mulch materials. The PPC production technology at the Changchun Institute of Applied Chemistry, Chinese Academy of Sciences, is the best in the world; the polymer produced has a molecular weight of over 150,000 daltons, with a carbon dioxide content of around 42%. In January 2026, the 50,000-ton/year PPC plant developed jointly by the Changchun Institute of Applied Chemistry, Lianhong Gerun (Shandong) New Materials Co., Ltd., and Sinopec Guangzhou Engineering Co., Ltd., marked a crucial step forward in the industrial application of China’s independently developed technology for carbon dioxide-based biodegradable materials.
