The role of water as a solvent is mainly to affect the selectivity and solubility of the solvent; an increase in water content leads to better selectivity but a decrease in solubility. Water injection is primarily used to replenish the water lost in the system; this loss of water occurs mainly as a result of the extract and raffinate being carried out of the system. The water is injected into the solvent regeneration tank via a stripping steam generator, thereby enabling the solvent to be stripped and regenerated.
