The reformer recycle hydrogen compressor has been replaced with a centrifugal compressor. Under normal circumstances, as the hydrogen circulates, no surging occurs at the point where the outlet connects back to the inlet. However, why is there also a surge prevention line installed on the unit itself? Some say it’s meant for quickly pressurizing the system during startup, but I don’t quite understand this. I hope someone knowledgeable can explain what its actual purpose is. Additionally, under what conditions does the reformer recycle hydrogen compressor experience surging?

Surge typically occurs when the intake flow rate is insufficient. The anti-surge line is used to supplement the inlet flow with outlet flow, thereby preventing surge and protecting both the equipment and normal process operations. At times, when the pressure in the high-pressure section of the reformer becomes too low, this line can be opened to maintain the pressure within the reaction system and thus control the rate at which coke forms on the catalyst.

Compared to shutting down the compressor due to surge, the cost-benefit ratio of setting an anti-surge line is significantly different; moreover, in most cases the compressor does not operate at a constant load, and changes in load can lead to surge conditions. It must be set.
