On June 28th, there was news that attracted a lot of attention: the Baihetan Hydropower Station began operating, marking another historic moment for large-scale hydropower projects in China. (Measured by installed capacity) First place: China’s Three Gorges Dam – 22.5 million watts. Second place: China’s Baihetan Dam on the Jinsha River – 16 million watts. Third place: Itaipu Dam on the Paraná River in Brazil and Paraguay – 14 million watts. Fourth place: China’s Xiluodu Dam on the Jinsha River – 13.86 million watts. Fifth place: Belo Monte Dam on the Amazon River in Brazil – 11.23 million watts. Sixth place: Inga Dam on the Caroni River in Venezuela – 10.24 million watts. Seventh place: China’s Wudongde Dam on the Jinsha River – 10.2 million watts. Eighth place: Tucuruí Dam on the Tocantins River in Brazil – 8.37 million watts. Ninth place: China’s Xiangjiaba Dam on the Jinsha River – 7.75 million watts. Tenth place: Grand Coulee Dam on the Columbia River in the United States – 6.81 million watts.
