A section of carbon steel pipe for water supply and drainage, with a wall thickness of 8 mm; it was coated with asphalt cloth for external corrosion protection, but over time it deteriorated to this state. Terrifying!
The corrosion is uneven; some parts of the fluid have suffered severe corrosion, while the areas at the top that are not exposed to flowing water have almost no corrosion.

The water contains coal dust impurities and is weakly alkaline, so it provides little corrosion protection outside. Annoyed, I replaced it with a seamless pipe, and it has lasted 5 years. :L
The same is true for carbon dioxide emission stacks; corrosion was taken into account in the design, and titanium was considered as a suitable material, but the high cost associated with structures 180 meters tall made it unsuitable. Carbon steel lined with glass phosphide sheets was chosen; in practice, as the hot gas emitted to the outlet encountered cold air, it condensed into a weak acid, causing ring-shaped pitting corrosion on the emission tube. Eventually, it became necessary to cut off a section of the tube and replace it with titanium material.

That’s absolutely true, but leaders don’t think that way when making decisions – they go for the cheapest option (or try to pay less by setting low standards); the interests of those in power dictate their decisions. Little do they know, fixing it will cost even more money.
There’s no need to worry too much about this; it’s sufficient to provide technical advice, inform the decision-makers, and keep records of those communications. Just do what falls within your responsibilities, the parts that are under your control.
Not only is there corrosion inside, but corrosion may also occur beneath the insulation layer on the outside due to the deterioration of the external insulation over time
There is also asphalt sheeting applied on the outside, so there is dripping, but it doesn’t flow down in a heavy stream.
