The structure of the No. 2 main building for the world’s largest salt cavern compressed air energy storage power plant has been completed. Recently, the construction of the structure of the No. 2 main building for the Huaneng Jintan 2×350 megawatt salt cavern compressed air energy storage power project, undertaken by Shandong Electric Power Construction Company No. 1, was successfully finished, marking a significant milestone in the project’s development and laying a solid foundation for the subsequent installation of equipment and the progress of the entire project. As the largest concrete structure in this project, the upper structure of the No. 2 main plant is a fair-faced concrete frame structure. With a height of 32.5 meters, it features 18 axes, an overall east-west length of 178 meters, and a north-south span of 37 meters. Due to its complex structure and large scale, the floors where major equipment such as air compressor units and air turbine expansion generators are located are arranged as large, open spaces. It is one of the core buildings of the compressed air energy storage power station, carrying out key functions such as the operation of essential equipment, air compression, power generation, and system control. Since the foundation of the plant building at the Huaneng Jintan project site, operated by Shandong Electric Power Construction Company No.1, reached a depth of zero meters, the team has focused on achieving the set milestones by organizing work carefully, making thorough plans, and coordinating all available resources effectively. They overcame various challenges such as delayed drawings, extreme weather conditions, limited space, and high construction difficulties. By establishing a reverse schedule, using visual management tools for task coordination, and optimizing construction procedures, plans, and timing, they carried out initiatives such as the \"Thunder Action\" for safe production, as well as activities like \"Quality Month\" and \"Labor Competitions.\" They strengthened safety and quality supervision throughout the entire process, and through concerted efforts, they managed to complete the entire construction process from foundation work to the completion of the main structure in just 5 months, in a safe and efficient manner. The on-site safe, civilized, and environmentally sustainable construction practices, technical quality control, project progress, and level of project management were recognized by the owner and the supervision unit, fully demonstrating the Electric Power Construction Corps’ efficient ability to fulfill its commitments and its strong brand strength. Next, the project team will continue to uphold the spirit of a disciplined and dedicated workforce characterized by innovation and excellence. By building on this momentum and maintaining a work style marked by high standards, efficiency, and strict requirements, they will steadily advance the project development, create a demonstration project for compressed air energy storage, and contribute to the expansion of the company’s innovative businesses as well as its high-quality development. In recent years, salt cavern compressed air energy storage has been regarded as an underground \"green power bank\" – a rapidly developing type of large-scale, long-duration energy storage facility. The project will involve the construction of two sets of 350-megawatt non-regenerative compressed air energy storage power generation units. The total volume of salt caverns used for storing air is 1.2 million cubic meters. The world’s most advanced air turbines and compression units will be developed and installed, with 100% localization of the core equipment. This makes it the compressed air energy storage power plant with the highest individual capacity, the largest total capacity, and the best overall efficiency in the world. It is reported that once completed, the Huaneng Jintan 2×350 megawatt salt cavern compressed air energy storage power generation project is expected to undergo 330 charge/discharge cycles per year. Each charge can store 2.8 million kilowatt-hours of energy, resulting in an annual power generation output of 924 million kilowatt-hours. This amount is equivalent to saving 270,000 tons of standard coal and reducing carbon dioxide emissions by 520,000 tons. It will help improve the regional energy structure, enhance the grid’s capacity for regulation and the ability to utilize new energy sources, and promote the efficient use of renewable energy. Thus, it will provide support for achieving China’s \"dual carbon\" goals and contribute to the country’s energy security strategy.
