What is a floor deck, and what are its advantages over traditional reinforced concrete floors?

Floor deck plates, also known as profiled steel sheets or steel bearing plates, are metal sheets that are formed by cold-rolling or hot-rolling galvanized steel sheets into shapes with specific wave-like cross-sections (commonly V-shaped, U-shaped, or trapezoidal), as shown in the figure below. Floor slabs are primarily used as permanent formwork for pouring floor concrete; once the concrete reaches its designed strength, they can work together with the concrete to bear loads, thus forming a \"steel-concrete composite floor\" structure.
Common floor deck systems consist of a spatial truss structure formed by welding the top chords, bottom chords, and web members, along with a bottom plate and connectors. The upper and lower reinforcement bars are usually 10 mm in diameter, while the web reinforcement bars are 5 mm diameter steel wires. The bottom plate is typically made of galvanized steel plates with a thickness of 0.5 mm, made of Q235 or Q345 material; Q235 is the most commonly used material.
Furthermore, hooks or tenon designs are provided at the corners and joints of the floor deck panels; the two panels are connected using these hooks, thereby preventing leakage of concrete during pouring. Although steel floor decks have many advantages, certain common issues must be taken into account during construction: for example, since the galvanized sheet is only 0.5 millimeters thick (which is too thin), care must be taken to prevent the edges of the sheet from curling, and the joint areas should be prepared in advance； To integrate the floor deck with the main beams, two rows of studs must be welded at the main beams, secondary beams, and large steel beams (commonly 19*76 mm studs, depending on the design requirements); the horizontal spacing between these studs is generally 20 centimeters, with a distance of 5 centimeters from the edge of the steel structure. Additionally, ceramic washers, or ceramic rings, must be used during stud welding to prevent the arc from escaping and to ensure better control over the welding quality ； Generally, the GMAW process is used for construction on-site. In terms of cost, floor decks also have certain advantages. According to market prices, reinforced steel truss floor decks cost approximately 105–120 yuan per square meter ； Traditional cast-in-place floor: approximately 130-150 yuan/㎡ ； A floor deck per square meter can save approximately 20-30 yuan compared to traditional reinforced concrete floors, resulting in savings of 200,000-300,000 yuan for a project covering 10,000 square meters.
In terms of construction time, floor deck systems also have certain advantages. Using floor deck systems can reduce the construction period by 30–50%, while also cutting down on management costs and machinery usage fees; this enables earlier commissioning of the structure, thereby generating economic benefits. Thanks to factory-based production, the quality of floor deck panels remains stable, which reduces the rate of on-site rework and repair costs. At the same time, the good durability of floor decks extends their maintenance cycle, which can also help reduce subsequent repair costs to a certain extent. As an innovative building steel component, floor deck systems have not only transformed the construction methods for traditional floors but also achieved a dual improvement in structural performance and economic efficiency through the synergistic effects of steel-concrete composite structures. From prefabrication in the factory to rapid installation on site, and from reducing material consumption to lowering life-cycle costs, floor deck systems are becoming the preferred flooring solution for high-rise buildings, large-span structures, and industrial facilities.
