Construction has begun on China’s largest strategic peak-shaving gas storage facility in the central and western regions. The Yu37 gas storage facility will have a capacity of 10 billion cubic meters for peak-shaving purposes, sufficient to meet the gas needs of 60 million households. According to China Petroleum Network (reporters: Shao Fengxia, Zhuang Qi), on June 6, the Second Gas Production Plant of Changqing Oilfield held a foundation-laying ceremony for the Yu37 gas storage facility in Yulin City, Shaanxi Province, marking the official start of construction of this largest strategic peak-shaving gas storage facility in China’s central and western regions. The Yu 37 gas storage facility has been designated as a key construction project by the National Development and Reform Commission, Shaanxi Province’s 14th Five-Year Plan, and the city of Yulin. Once completed, it will play an important role in ensuring a stable supply of gas for domestic use in the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region, as well as in Yulin and its surrounding areas in Shaanxi Province. Through 7 rounds of scientific validation through injection and production tests, the Yu 37 gas reservoir adopted a new construction model based on a \"three-zone\" structure comprising a core high-pressure injection and production area, an intermediate auxiliary gas extraction area, and a peripheral monitoring area; approval for its preliminary design was obtained in May 2023. Currently, the Yuli 37 gas storage facility project includes a total of 3 stations, 1 production support site, 1 production control center, 15 pipelines, and 37 gas wells. For the welding of the large-diameter two-way gas pipelines in the construction of the Yu 37 gas storage facility, a new process that combines \"fully automatic welding + fully automatic ultrasonic testing + mechanical repair + digital delivery\" was adopted. Two intelligent project management systems, namely \"smart construction site\" and \"digital delivery\", were used to ensure precise control over the construction site from multiple perspectives, enabling monitoring of construction progress, safety management, quality oversight, and material management all from a single interface. This approach significantly improved the welding success rate and construction speed. The key equipment installed at the gathering and injection station of the Yu 37 gas storage facility, including 4 sets of electrically driven centrifugal compressors and 3 sets of triethylene glycol dehydration units, are all of Chinese manufacture. Each unit is capable of handling up to 10 million cubic meters of gas per day, making them the most efficient devices of their kind in China at present. This represents a milestone and a model for the construction of other gas storage facilities in the country in the future. Once it reaches full capacity by 2027, the Yu 37 gas storage facility is expected to have the capability to regulate gas supply for a gas field with a capacity of 10 billion cubic meters, sufficient to meet the winter gas needs of 60 million households.
