Chloride salts and salt content

Is there a difference between chlorides and salt content? What’s the difference? I saw in a crude oil evaluation that for the same type of crude oil, these two values differ significantly. I hope someone knowledgeable can explain this to me!
This post was last edited by qugd on 2018-8-13 15:33. Salt is a general term; salts include chlorides. Chlorides specifically refer to salts whose anion is chloride. There are many types of salts in crude oil; in oil fields formed in marine environments, chlorides are particularly prominent. However, crude oil also contains bromides, sulfates, carbonates, organic acids, and so on.
In chemistry, salts refer to a class of compounds formed by the combination of metal ions or ammonium ions (NH4+) with anions or non-metal ions, such as calcium sulfate, copper chloride, and sodium acetate; chlorides are included in this category.
