Chevron begins offshore oil and gas exploration in Syria

　　According to Sinochem News, recently Chevron Corporation signed a memorandum of understanding with Qatar’s UCC Holding Company and Syria’s **Oil Company to carry out joint exploration for oil and gas resources in the Mediterranean Sea off Syria’s coast. The area is located in the Eastern Mediterranean Levant Basin, which is rich in natural gas, and is near large gas fields in Israel and Egypt. 　　Syria’s current main oil production comes from onshore fields in the northeast, but offshore areas hold significant exploration potential. Historically, Russian companies obtained exploration contracts in the region in 2013, but suspended operations in mid-2015 due to safety risks. The advancement of this new agreement marks progress by Syria in resuming its energy exploration activities. 　　This collaboration will focus on technical assessment and preliminary exploration, with the specific implementation timeline depending on subsequent technical evaluations and the finalization of commercial terms.
