The pressure in the turbine wheel chamber is the pressure after the regulating stage; during design, the strength effects when the valves are fully open under the highest operating conditions are taken into account. In operation, the pressure in the wheel chamber is used for monitoring the turbine’s operating conditions. If the pressure in the wheel chamber increases at the same flow rate, it may be due to fouling on the blades ; Conversely, at the same flow rate, a decrease in the wheel chamber pressure may be caused by wear of the steam seal plates between the blade stages downstream of the regulating stage.
The pressure in the turbine’s regulating stage: In small turbines, the first stage consists of a double-row of speed stages, also known as compound speed stages. This is the turbine’s regulating stage. Its function is to allow steam to enter it; it undertakes a large portion of the enthalpy reduction, converting the steam’s internal energy into mechanical energy of the rotor. The enthalpy of the steam after passing through the regulating stage is lower. In the design of small and medium-sized turbines, this allows for a reduction in the number of pressure stages, thereby shortening the rotor length and saving metal. There is a specified value for the pressure in the regulating stage, and during normal operation, this pressure should be less than or equal to that specified value.
