Everyone in hazardous areas knows that motors need to be explosion-proof, but it seems there’s never been a requirement for spark-free couplings (covers don’t count). Why is that?
If there are “non-sparking” couplings, wouldn’t there also need to be “sparking” couplings? Send a video to show what it looks like :)
Couplings in explosion-proof areas must be spark-free and explosion-proof types
It refers to spark-free shields, which are usually made of aluminum; those made of steel may generate sparks when opened and closed, so they cannot be used in explosion-proof areas
Explosion protection refers to electrical components (junction boxes); there are no couplings
It’s not about shields; in explosive hazard areas, wrenches made of copper are required for maintenance tools. But why isn’t consideration given to preventing sparks when it comes to couplings?
There are two concepts here. Explosion-proof tools are designed to prevent sparks from being generated during maintenance and repairs; other mechanical devices remain relatively stationary and do not generate sparks. It’s similar to pipeline equipment – it’s usually made of steel, not entirely of copper
