What are the characteristics and advantages of fusion welding without welding wire?
Pressure vessel welds generally do not use this method; self-fusing welding inevitably leads to the loss of certain chemical elements, which has a significant impact on the properties of the weld.
Fusing welding without filler metal will definitely result in the weld being lower than the surrounding areas, which does not comply with welding procedures.
I’ve really never seen pressure-bearing equipment being welded without the use of welding filler.
I have seen plasma welding of non-standard equipment and thin-walled stainless steel equipment, without the need for beveling or adding filler wire.
This welding method cannot yet be applied to pressure-bearing equipment, as it is not possible to conduct welding procedure qualification for this method.

Plasma welding without filler wire can be used for the root pass, followed by shaping on the reverse side, and then TIG welding can be used for the finish pass. As long as the welding procedure qualification is successful, it should be possible to use it on pressure vessels. It’s just that if no filler is used, the surface must be covered using a filling method in the end.
After TIG welding self-fluxing, the process of filler wire shielding must be carried out.
