Rolling diameter meters are widely used to detect the outer diameter quality during online production. But what is the situation at the rolling mill site? It is filled with mist, dust, and high temperatures, which pose a significant challenge to online optical diameter meters. The data obtained for round steel must be accurate; information such as the outer diameter and ovality, as well as surface defects, need to be measured. This article explores how the probes of steel rolling diameter measuring instruments are arranged, how measurements are taken, and how protection is provided. The steel rolling diameter measuring instrument is equipped with 4 probes; during measurement, the diameter of each rolled piece is determined in 4 directions: horizontal, vertical, and at 45° angles to the left and right. Due to the wide range of specifications and high precision requirements for the rolled materials to be measured in this project, four sets of dual-probe assemblies, each consisting of 70 single probes of different types, are installed under each probe head. The combined total measurement range is 100–600 mm, which meets the needs of measuring round bars with diameters of φ180–500 mm and square bars with dimensions of 160×160–280×280 mm. When switching product specifications during system measurement, the measurement software system will automatically select the appropriate dual-probe setup for the measurement. The four-channel dual-probe arrangement of the steel rolling diameter measuring instrument is located on the main housing, and it can measure the dimensions of the rolled material in the horizontal and vertical directions, as well as at angles of 45° to both the horizontal and vertical directions. Protection device solutions for calipers: 1. Add guide guards in front of the caliper. The probe of a caliper has a fixed measurement range; when the rolled material exceeds this range, accurate measurement becomes impossible. Since the rollers on this production line are flat rollers, the rolled material sways from side to side as it moves along them. Therefore, to ensure proper measurement, a guide should be placed in front of the diameter gauge. The side plates of the guide should be movable, and their opening width should not exceed the diameter (or side length) of the rolled material. 2. Install front and rear radiation protection covers: To ensure the proper functioning of the internal circuitry of the diameter measuring instrument, radiation protection covers should be installed on the rollers at the front and back of the instrument. The cover plate is designed with a water jacket interlayer structure, and is cooled by circulating water during use. The width of the cover plate is the same as or slightly larger than that of the roller table and the guide, and its length should be no less than 1.5 m. For round steel measurements, the diameter, average diameter, ellipticity, and the values measured by the four probes are displayed; for square steel measurements, the horizontal and vertical dimensions of the square steel, as well as the values of its two diagonals, are shown ; It displays real-time horizontal undulation, vertical undulation, and diagonal deviation. The measurement system software of the diameter tester features powerful chart analysis capabilities, and it allows each analysis chart to be displayed in a separately pop-up interface. For example, the fluctuation graph interface can display the size fluctuation changes of the four measurement values through fluctuation curves ; The defect analysis graph interface can display the location of defects and their types for the four measurement values, through color changes in the progress bar. For steel rolling production lines, the use of diameter measuring instruments allows for increased output and improved quality, and it is also an important method for enhancing profitability.
