May 2, 2024: On May 2nd, the world’s first deep-sea underwater automatic launching manifold, constructed by CNOOC Offshore Engineering Co., Ltd. (hereinafter referred to as “CNOOC Offshore Engineering”), was completed and delivered in Tianjin. This type of equipment was developed specifically for the Phase 2 project of \"Deep Sea No.1\" that is currently under construction, and it enables remote control of pigging operations in deep-sea pipelines. Its completion marks that China’s capability to independently design and build deep-water underwater equipment has reached the world’s leading level, which is of great significance for promoting the development and utilization of deep-water complex oil and gas resources in China and accelerating the achievement of high-level self-reliance and strength in marine technology. “The Phase II project of \"Deep Sea No.1\" is China’s first deep-water and high-pressure project. It was developed using a model that combines an underwater production system, a shallow-water jacket processing platform, and a remotely operated deep-water semi-submersible platform. A new underwater production system and a comprehensive processing platform were constructed, and an offshore pipeline with a length of over 130 kilometers and a diameter of over 20 inches was built to connect the deep-water underwater production system to the shallow-water jacket platform, thereby transporting the oil and gas produced by deep-water gas wells. The automatically operated loading manifold that has been completed in this construction is an important component of the underwater production system for the gas field; once put into use, it will be remotely controlled by the \"Deep Sea One\" energy station via an umbilical cable.
“Although the export pipeline of Phase II of ‘Deep Sea No.1’ is large enough to allow an adult to crawl through it, operating in a low-temperature and high-pressure environment for extended periods still makes it prone to the accumulation of hydrates and paraffin, which affects the efficiency of pipeline transportation and the safety of the production system; therefore, regular cleaning is necessary. ”Yin Feng, deputy manager of the underwater facilities department for CNOOC’s Phase II of the \"Deep Sea No.1\" project, said that conventional deep-water pipeline cleaning and inspection operations typically require the installation of two submarine pipelines at surface facilities to form a cleaning circuit; this results in high costs for materials and construction, thereby raising the financial barriers to oil and gas development underwater, especially in deep-sea fields. The deep-water area where Phase 2 of \"Deep Sea No.1\" is located is far from the fixed production facilities, and there is only one long-distance subsea pipeline; therefore, carrying out related operations requires the temporary deployment of construction assets such as deep-water engineering vessels, resulting in extremely high operational costs.
CNOOC has developed and constructed underwater automatic pigging manifolds aimed at further reducing the costs associated with pigging operations in deep-water pipelines as well as the operation of deep-water gas fields, thereby enabling remote automatic pigging. This type of underwater automatic ball-launching manifold is equipped with key control and monitoring devices such as an underwater control module, hydraulic remotely controlled valves, and temperature and pressure sensors. Additionally, 6 cleaning balls are built into the launching device, allowing all operations related to sending the cleaning balls into the pipeline and carrying out cleaning to be carried out \"silently\" on the seabed based on remote commands. The underwater automatic launching manifold for Phase II of ‘Deep Sea One’ can operate at depths of up to 1,000 meters, with an operating temperature limit of over 120 degrees Celsius. It weighs 360 tons; compared to the underwater manifolds used in Phase I of ‘Deep Sea One’, it is smaller in size and lighter in weight, featuring a more compact design and a denser arrangement of pipelines. It is capable of operating without maintenance in high-pressure, low-temperature seawater environments for 25 years. ”According to Zhang Fei, deputy general manager of CNOOC Engineering’s Special Equipment Division, the working conditions of the underwater automatic ball launching manifold for Phase II of \"Deep Sea No.1\" are extremely harsh. The construction process faces numerous challenges, including the highest standards of inspection required worldwide, as well as the difficulty of welding small-diameter pipes at a world-class level.
