This post was last edited by zzlwqj on 2018-4-20 at 14:27. It deals with a pump used for preparing alkaline solutions: a 10% NaOH solution at room temperature, with an outlet pressure of 2.0 MPa. The pump is a diaphragm metering pump manufactured by Nikkiso; it was installed and put into use in 2007. The material of the pump cover is 316 stainless steel. Recently, a longitudinal crack was found at the center of the pump cover, as shown in the image. I would like to ask experts what could be the cause?
There are many reasons. Life span, pressure, materials. And other such aspects. Your photo isn’t very clear. . .

The quality of Nikkiso metering pumps is excellent. It might be due to improper use or the age of the item. Material selection issue.
It has been in use for a long time; what is the frequency of use? But normal damage?

First, measure the thickness and check the original data; compare the thickness at the crack site. If there is a reduction in thickness and a decrease in strength, it is possible for cracks to appear during normal operation, or due to pressure buildup at the outlet
Could it be alkaline stress corrosion cracking?
