In most cases, buried pipes are laid in the surface soil. Most people would think that soil is simply a granular solid, but in fact, in our research, we consider soil to be a three-phase system comprising solids, liquids, and gases, with the latter two playing a crucial role. Among them, solid substances include soil minerals, organic matter, and microorganisms, while liquids and gases are present in the pores of soil particles. Based on their type, soils can be classified into sandy soil, clayey soil, and loamy soil. Sandy soil is characterized by a high sand content, coarse particles, rapid water permeability, poor water retention capacity, and good aeration properties. Clayey soil has properties that are the opposite of those of sandy soil, while loamy soil possesses intermediate characteristics. When pipes are buried in soils of different properties, the degree of corrosion varies. In fact, in many cases, a pipeline needs to come into contact with soils of different properties, and the varying physicochemical characteristics of the pipeline surface can very likely lead to accelerated corrosion of the pipeline; therefore, anti-corrosion measures must be taken more carefully in such situations.
