There are over a hundred projects involved, mainly in the fields of oilfield surface engineering, atmospheric and vacuum distillation, wastewater stripping, desulfurization and decarbonization, LNG, and light hydrocarbon recovery! For those working in the oil and gas industry, surface engineering, or petroleum refining, it is an essential tool. CNOOC’s entire system utilizes this software. Additionally, both Sinopec and PetroChina have made group purchases of Aspen series software this year; this speaks volumes about its importance. For beginners, it’s not difficult to get started with the software; just search the forums for relevant information if you have any questions. You can come and post to communicate, hehe
It’s not hard to get started, but mastering it is difficult. I even tried to use it, and the system crashed; I still haven’t installed it yet
I used to use A+ for years, but it seemed like I only had a superficial understanding of it. HYSYS is more commonly used in the oil and gas sector; after spending some time learning it, I now know just the basics of its use. Indeed, learning *software does require frequent use and self-exploration, but after all it’s not a professional field – it’s just a tool. To become proficient in it, one needs to keep studying and engaging in discussions. Here, I would like to thank Instructor Lele for his guidance! I still want to master HYSYS; I must hurry up!
May I ask, should one learn software first, or master the theory of unit operations first? Also, what can be done to improve when one just follows examples alone, without any specific projects? Thank you first
For beginners in HYSYS, I personally think the HYSYS 2004 version from Daqing is quite classic, offering step-by-step tutorials; actually, these tutorials were also translated by foreigners, hehe. “Flaresim torch tip simulation software for the design and verification of torches, as well as calculations related to thermal radiation, noise, and dispersion! ! ”For Flaresim, it seems that cold vent diffusion calculations cannot be performed. The design of the torch tip mainly involves calculations regarding the pipe diameter and thermal radiation; an Excel spreadsheet can be used for these calculations in accordance with API521. It’s just that the values in some of the charts in api521 are highly inaccurate; this is really frustrating. For example, when trying to determine the flame length based on heat, they simply use regression analysis of data from several substances to draw a straight line. However, this standard is used internationally, so there should be no problems. I’m not sure what advantages the Flaresim software has in this regard; I haven’t used the software myself.
Let me talk about my learning process. I studied mathematics and computer science, and my initial exposure to this software came through the training materials from Daqing from 2004; that was the only resource I had at the time. I didn’t understand many of the principles back then, so I just studied hard. When I was confused, I would search on Baidu to find answers, and I would think about why certain inputs were used, what their purpose was, whether other parameters could be used in place of them, and what the relationships between them were. In total, I worked through all the examples maybe less than ten times, but each time I gained new insights and discovered something new. That’s how I gradually figured things out. Of course, this process lasted around three months. After that, it was about teaching others how to use it; further improvements were made based on the issues they reported. Later on, I worked with them on projects, and it was at that time that true improvement took place. With your background in this field, as long as you put in the effort to study, you should be able to get started quite quickly!
Version 3.X of Flaresim software has seen significant improvements; cold emissions can also be handled, though some data needs to be processed, and of course processing this data is a technical task. Two cold discharge projects have been successfully completed. Actually, once you understand the principles behind using the software, none of these will be a problem. When it comes to calculating thermal radiation and diffusion, this software certainly has its own advantages; if one simply uses the formulas from API521, then the value of this software cannot be realized! Drawing on the experience with A+, I believe it’s necessary to first understand the relevant unit operation theories; otherwise, when learning a certain software, one will just follow steps mechanically, without knowing what each parameter means. If one only follows the steps outlined in the textbooks and learns only the basic input procedures of the software, they will understand how to do things but not why, resulting in a weak memory of the information. Moreover, the purpose of learning such software is to use it effectively, so I think it’s better to first grasp the theories related to those units before proceeding to learn the simulations for those units*
Actually, as long as you’re willing to put in the effort to learn, there are many ways to achieve the same goal – you can definitely learn well. Keep it up; feel free to reach out if you have any questions
