The advantage of PDMS is that you can see the result immediately; especially for the piping layout in such ductwork and boundary areas, it’s not possible to get an accurate understanding just by looking at CAD drawings. The downside is that it’s not widely used in the industry, so many modules have to be developed on one’s own; if there isn’t enough staff, one has to take care of everything themselves. One needs to be proficient in one’s own field, but also understand other fields; it’s necessary to communicate and make adjustments with those from other fields from time to time, so it can be a bit frustrating.
Why isn’t it used much in the industry? Expensive!
There is a reason why it’s expensive. I’m working on a project right now, and without this software, if I rely only on PID charts, the pipelines in the entire project would likely be arranged in a chaotic manner, fitting in wherever there’s space. So there are still advantages; the downside is that only I use it, while other specialties do not, making it impossible to carry out joint design and construction.
The results look pretty good; give it a thumbs up
So you also need to deal with the requirements for instrument installation, electrical wiring, the layout of cable trays, the arrangement of heating and ventilation ducts, as well as specialized tasks related to fire protection, tap water supply, lighting, water supply and drainage, and so on. Otherwise, if it’s just a single process, it will be found to be incompatible with other specialties, requiring adjustments.
Who says it’s not used much? It’s everywhere
Looking at different industries, it seems that the oil industry uses it a lot, but in other industries, there are other 3D modeling software options that can serve as substitutes.
