According to people familiar with the matter, in the most recent tender conducted in April, India purchased 2.5 million tons of urea at a price almost twice that of two months earlier. This deal could further exacerbate the recent global shortage of urea. According to Reuters on the 22nd, the volume of urea purchased under this deal is enormous, the highest ever recorded in India. India is the world’s largest importer of urea, with annual urea imports amounting to around 10 million tons in 2025. The report cited anonymous officials in the Indian government as saying that Indian Potash Limited issued procurement tender plans earlier this month, ultimately agreeing to import 1 million tons of urea and 1.5 million tons of urea to India’s east and west coasts at prices of $959 and $935 per ton, respectively. The bid documents state that the ships carrying the winning urea must set sail for India no later than June 14 of this year. Indian Potash Limited is the largest potash importer in India. The suppliers participating in the bidding can supply a total of 5.6 million tons of urea, but most of their bid prices are around $1,000 per ton, with the highest bid reaching $1,136 per ton. Reports say that even if Indian Potash Limited eventually imports 2.5 million tons of urea at the lowest possible price, the cost will still be almost twice the level it was two months ago. When the Indian Chemicals and Fertilizers Corporation previously issued tenders for the purchase of urea, the winning bid prices per ton for urea to be delivered to India’s east and west coasts were 512 dollars and 508 dollars respectively. Urea is a fertilizer widely used in India’s agricultural sector, and natural gas is an important raw material for its production; India is highly dependent on imports of natural gas. Affected by the conflicts in Iran, global urea prices have risen and supply is tight. India’s fertilizer production dropped by nearly a quarter on a year-on-year basis in March.
