I have some questions for everyone: What does the nominal pressure in a safety valve model refer to? Does it refer to the maximum pressure at which the safety valve of this model can open, or to the nominal size of the corresponding flange? For example, in a safety valve of the model A42Y-16C, what does the number “16” specifically mean? Does it refer to the maximum opening pressure of the modified safety valve being 16 MPa, or does it mean that the nominal pressure of the flange designed to match it is 16 MPa?
The nominal pressure generally refers to the maximum operating pressure that a safety valve can withstand; this value is typically determined based on the design, manufacturing, and testing standards for safety valves. For the A42Y-16C model of safety valve, the “16” indicates that the designed nominal pressure of this safety valve is 1.6 megapascals (MPa), while “C” denotes that the material used is carbon steel. This nominal pressure does not refer to the opening pressure of the safety valve, but rather corresponds to the nominal pressure class of the pipes or equipment for which that model of safety valve is suitable. The actual opening pressure of the safety valve is set based on actual usage conditions, and it must be lower than this nominal pressure value. .

The operating pressure is ≤ the design pressure; if the operating pressure is set at 1.6 MPa, then the design pressure is higher. In that case, the flange type chosen by the equipment designer will definitely be one rated for 2.5 MPa or higher, so it’s not possible to use this particular flange type
The set pressure is less than or equal to the design pressure, and there is also an allowable deviation; different values are used depending on the operating conditions. For example, the allowable overpressure in a fire scenario is 21%, so the set pressure multiplied by 121% represents the trigger pressure.
