I read in some materials that for pressure vessels containing highly toxic gases, rupture disks should be used as pressure relief devices, rather than safety valves. I’m not quite sure why an easy-to-use rupture disc is preferred over a safety valve; please share your thoughts – it will earn extra points
Perhaps the burst disc is not prone to leakage and does not require calibration. The safety valve may fail to activate or experience internal leakage; it needs to be taken apart for testing. What didn’t leak before may start leaking after testing, and such leaks are not easy to detect
A burst disc is disposable and can ensure no leakage under normal conditions, whereas a safety valve cannot guarantee no leakage under normal conditions.
Safety valves will have slight leaks; we use rupture disks in conjunction with safety valves
Safety valves always have a slight leak. As long as the gasket of the burst disc is properly sealed, there will be no leakage from the burst disc itself. Once the burst disc opens, pressure is also released to the venting system, rather than being discharged directly.
Applicable areas: •1. Pressure vessel burst disc devices used to prevent overpressure or excessive vacuum. •2. Burst pressure not exceeding 500 MPa and not less than 0.001 MPa. Non-applicable areas: •1. Pressure vessels with a detonation-type reaction speed. •2. Burst disc safety devices for defense** equipment with special requirements
