When the design temperature of the lower head of a tower-type vessel is greater than or equal to 400°C, an air barrier ring should be installed above the skirt near the head. At high temperatures, significant local stresses occur at the junction between the skirt and the head; therefore, for equipment operating at temperatures above 400°C, an air barrier is installed in the structure to reduce the temperature difference between these two parts, thereby eliminating stress.

When the design temperature is 400 degrees or higher, an air barrier should be installed to alleviate excessive thermal stress differences. The position of the air barrier ring is related to the diameter of the bottom tower; the larger the diameter, the lower the air barrier ring is placed, in order to create a larger space for it. For critical equipment, to ensure its safe operation, temperature field and fatigue analysis are preferably conducted when conditions permit.
