The sugar industry has now entered an era of slim profits, and the added value of by-products such as sugarcane bagasse and filter sludge has not been fully exploited. Sugarcane bagasse is used as fuel or sold to paper mills, while filter sludge poses a significant environmental challenge; it is currently used as fertilizer. Using existing technology, sugarcane bagasse and filter sludge can be turned into charcoal. If it is biochar, it is mainly used in the heating market, with a price of over 3,000 yuan per ton; the price becomes even higher when it is turned into activated carbon. It is now known that there are no issues with the technology used to produce charcoal from sugarcane bagasse; the organic content on a dry basis in the filter sludge is over 50%, so that should also be fine. The main goal is to find manufacturers in this industry who are capable of delivering high-quality products; the output for both sugarcane bagasse and filter sludge is 500 tons per day. A sugarcane sugar factory is a standard fuel-powered power plant that generates excess electricity and high-pressure steam. Manufacturers who can solve it can also come and discuss it.

It was later found that the volatile content of sugarcane bagasse was too high; using it to produce burning charcoal was not economical, so it was only viable for use in producing activated carbon.
