The reactants (raw materials) enter at one end of the tube, where a chemical reaction takes place as they flow through the tube, and the resulting products exit from the other end. To control the temperature conditions required for the reaction, tubular reactors are typically equipped with a heat exchange system. The heat transfer medium flows outside the reaction tube (for example, in a jacket or shell side), thereby heating or cooling the reactants inside the tube. Depending on the structural design, the images provided show three main types of tubular reactors: Straight Tube Reactor: It has a relatively simple structure, consisting of straight tubes. To improve the mixing of the reaction materials, static mixers and internal baffles can be installed inside the tube. Coiled Tube Reactor: The reaction tubes are bent into a spiral shape and coiled inside the shell. The images show that static mixers may also be installed inside the tubes of this type of reactor to promote mixing. Multi-tube Reactor: Similar to a shell-and-tube heat exchanger, it consists of a bundle of many parallel thin tubes that are installed within a large shell. The reactants flow inside the tube, while the heat transfer medium flows in the shell side outside the tube. Internal baffles are usually installed in the shell side to guide the flow direction of the heat transfer medium and improve heat exchange efficiency.
