Hello, an expert came to the company for an inspection. When checking the hydrogen compressor, it was found that the pressure and temperature of the lubricating oil in the compressor could only be monitored on-site, with no remote monitoring or alarm functions available for detecting high or low values. I would like to ask whether the lubricating oil pressure and temperature of the hydrogen compressor need to be displayed remotely?
It is certainly necessary, and it is best to participate in control and interlocking
Compressor oil pressure and oil temperature are very important parameters for the unit; these parameters generally need to be included in the interlocks for starting and stopping the unit. Can’t it display remotely whether remote display instrumentation is configured or not? Just ask the professionals at your company and you’ll know right away.
Since the device was brought in as part of a demolition project and retains its original control system after reinstallation, remote display functionality has not been installed.
Since it’s the original system, it should have communication interfaces; generally, it has Modbus communication ports. What control system do you have on site?
This is indeed necessary; the temperature and pressure of the lubricating oil are two important factors related to the equipment’s interlock systems. It is essential to ensure that the proper pressure and temperature are maintained before starting the equipment, in order to meet the startup conditions. Additionally, during operation, the lubricating oil also plays a role in the interlock system – if the lubricating oil pump fails and it isn’t detected right away, the compressor could get damaged. Therefore, the lubricant pressure and temperature must be transmitted to the DCS, which also facilitates monitoring by the main operators; if one has to check them on-site, it would be extremely troublesome and time-consuming.

I have come across such hydrogen compressors that are controlled by PLC, with monitoring and interlocks for temperature and pressure, but without a DCS system. Later, I installed pressure transducers at the inlet and outlet of the hydrogen press for DCS monitoring.
