I want to use methanol catalytic cracking to produce syngas (CO, H2). Compared with producing syngas directly from coal (with a CO+H2 content of over 90%), ignoring the costs associated with methanol cracking, the only difference seems to be the costs involved in methanol synthesis and purification. I’m not very familiar with the methanol synthesis process; I would appreciate some guidance from those with more experience.
With different processes, catalytic cracking should be more stable, right?
Using methanol to produce syngas is definitely more costly. I wonder how much the cost differs from producing syngas directly from coal, and what are the reasons for this difference?
If you think about it this way, methanol is produced from coal, and synthetic gas is generated by cracking methanol – isn’t it easier to understand the costs in terms of energy?
Coal-to-gas projects are difficult to get approved, as the gas-using equipment does not match the requirements in terms of pressure and other factors; this results in complex processing procedures, high energy consumption, and high investment costs. It’s similar to the MTO (Methanol-to-Olefins) projects in coastal areas, where methanol is directly cracked to produce syngas, which saves a lot of trouble and investment. Synthesis gas is produced from methanol due to the limitations associated with producing it from coal; similar to MTO projects in coastal areas where olefins are produced directly from methanol. What I’m not sure about is by how much the cost of producing synthesis gas from methanol is higher than that of producing it from coal (with a CO+H2 content of over 90%) How to compare? Without considering the costs associated with methanol cracking, can it be simply assumed that the cost of coal-based syngas plus the cost of methanol synthesis equals the cost of methanol-based syngas? By how much does the cost of coal-based syngas used in coal-to-methanol production differ from the cost of the coal-based syngas required (with a CO+H2 content of over 90%)? Thank you!

You can find a friend who works at a coal-based syngas plant and use the production data to do the calculations; simply take into account factors such as electricity and water costs, depreciation of equipment, workers’ salaries, bank interest, and so on – it’s possible to work this out
